Although I was in Amsterdam only for one day there were quite some things that attracted my attention. Continue reading to learn more.
Auch wenn ich nur für einen Tag in Amsterdam war, sind mir einige Sachen aufgefallen, die ich in diesem Artikel mit euch teilen möchte.
1. You should always carry along a city map
No matter whether you choose an online city map or a conventional one made of paper. It’s always useful to have one with you because a lot of streets and canals look very similar and there’s always the chance to get lost. And also, who can quickly tell streets like Koestraat, Kerkstraat and Kalverstraat apart?
1. Habe immer einen Stadtplan dabei
Egal, ob Du Dich für eine App mit Stadtplan oder für einen Herkömmlichen aus Papier entscheidest. Einen Stadtplan dabei zu haben ist in Amsterdam durchaus sinnvoll. Viele Straßen und Grachten sehen sehr ähnlich aus und die Gefahr, sich zu verlaufen besteht durchaus. Außerdem, wer kann schon Straßennamen wie Koestraat, Kerkstraat und Kalverstraat auf die Schnelle auseinander halten?
2. Bikers can be dangerous
No, it’s not a cliché. Apparently, there are more bikes than people in Amsterdam. But bikes are not only beautiful (for example when they are leant against the canal’s bridges –> great photo object) but also dangerous. Of course the whole city is designed for cyclists and there are everywhere bike paths but however you should be beware of them. It’s not uncommonly that they are passing you almost as fast as a car. And when you are absently taking pictures of Amsterdam (like me), you should pay attention that you aren’t crossing the red light and therefore increase the chance of being overrun.
2. Fahrradfahrer können gefährlich sein
Nein, es ist wirklich kein Klischee. In Amsterdam scheint es tatsächlich mehr Fahrräder als Menschen zu geben. Fahrräder sehen nicht nur schön aus (wenn sie beispielsweise an die Geländer der Grachtenbrücken gelehnt werden –> super Fotomotiv), sondern können auch gefährlich sein. Natürlich ist die komplette Stadt aufs Fahrradfahren ausgelegt und überall gibt es Fahrradwege, aber dennoch sollte man sich vor ihnen in Acht nehmen. Fast so schnell wie Autos rasen sie teilweise an einem vorbei. Und wenn Du gedankenverloren fast ununterbrochen Fotos vom schönen Amsterdam machst (so wie ich), musst Du schon aufpassen, dass Du nicht über Rot läufst und somit die Chance vergrößerst unter die Räder zu kommen.
3. If you want to eat a hot dog, you will hit pay dirt
In terms of food, the first thing that attract my attention was the fact that there are hot dog stalls at almost every turn. Just like crêpe stalls in Paris. For me (as a vegetarian) it wasn’t always that easy to find some food because I was desperately looking for “Poffertjes” but didn’t find any.
3. Solltest Du Hunger auf Hot Dogs haben, wirst Du überall fündig
Was das Essen betrifft, ist mir als erstes aufgefallen, dass fast an jeder Ecke ein Hot Dog Stand zu finden ist. Ähnlich wie es in Paris Crêpe Stände gibt. Ich, als Vegetarierin, bin was das Essen angeht nicht immer sofort fündig geworden und habe verzweifelt nach Poffertjes Ständen Ausschau gehalten, leider jedoch keinen gefunden.
4. Having enough memory space on your cell phone/camera is an absolute must
Almost everything in Amsterdam is beautiful. The houses, the canals, the flowers, the lanterns, the street signs and all the front doors. There are beautiful photo spots at every turn and when you haven’t enough space on your digital devices it is really sad.
Unfortunately, I did not experience Amsterdam at dawn or at sunset but I can imagine this city to be at least twice as beautiful than at daytime. So make certain to have enough memory space.
4. Genug Speicherplatz auf dem Handy bzw. Kamera zu haben ist ein absolutes Muss
Fast alles an Amsterdam ist schön. Die Häuser, die Grachten, die Pflanzen, die Laternen, die Straßenschilder und Haustüren. An jeder Ecke gibt es tolle Fotospots und wenn die Kamera nicht genug Speicherplatz hat, ist es sehr traurig.
Leider habe ich Amsterdam weder in der Morgendämmerung, noch bei Sonnenuntergang erlebt, doch ich kann mir vorstellen, dass die Stadt dann noch um einiges schöner aussieht, als wie sie es ohnehin schon ist. Daher: Habe genug Speicherplatz für Fotos zur Verfügung.
5. In the long run, the smell of weed can become disgusting
Of course, it doesn’t smell EVERYWHERE of weed but now and then you notice this sweetish odor. But what do you expect – it’s Amsterdam. If you are very hungry and wish for a delicious smell of pizza or croissants instead of weed, you might feel a little queasy. Al least that’s how I felt.
But no worries, it does not smell that disgusting and there are “normal” coffee shops and bakeries as well in which you can buy “normal” cookies.
5. Auf die Dauer kann der Gasgeruch ganz schön ekelig sein
Natürlich riecht es in Amsterdam nicht ÜBERALL nach Gras, aber hin und wieder kommt einem dieser süßliche Geruch schon in die Nase. Was will man schließlich erwarten, hier in Amsterdam. Wenn Du jedoch sehr hungrig bist und statt einem leckeren Pizza- oder Croissant-Geruch plötzlich einen Grasgeruch in der Nase hast, kann einem davon schon flau im Magen werden. So erging es mir jedenfalls teilweise.
Aber keine Sorge, wirklich ekelig riecht es auch nicht und es gibt durchaus “normale” Coffeeshops und Bäckereien, in denen es “normale” Cookies gibt.
