5 “A Star Is Born” quotes that make you think about life

alt=“a-star-is-born-quote“

In my opinion, ‘A Star Is Born” is  one of the best movies of all time. For now, I’ve seen it already three times and I just can’t get enough of it. It flashes me every time. The story, the music, the quotes, the cast… everything is just so perfect. I’ve never been a Lady Gaga fan but this movie changed everything. She’s just an incredible artist – as a musician as well as an actress. And I guess as a person, too. With this movie she showed a total new, real and raw facet of her which I love very much.
The movie is full of depth, and contains – besides all the heartwarming and emotional scenes – a lot of wisdom. The film faces many struggles that go along with fame and also diseases like drug addiction and alcoholism. Even when I watched it for the first time I noticed all the deep and wise quotes that are being said. Either literally or between the lines. It’s a movie you have to reflect on after you watched it. You can’t just go out of the cinema and pursue other things. I really had to think a lot and let it all sink in. Maybe the following 5  “A star is born” quotes inspire you and make you think about life, too. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments down below.

So here are my top 5 quotes from A Star is Born that make me think further:

Twelve notes and the octave repeats. It’s the same story told over and over, forever. All any artist can offer the world is how they see those twelve notes. That’s it. He loved how you see them.

This reminds me of the fact that every story is basically written – in a different form but the basic concept already exists. It’s just your personal touch you add to it. You really have to let it sink in. Every song that exists  just consists of those twelve tones. And yet each one is different. You can basically transfer this to many areas of your life. Also for example when you want to start writing a book or a story: the fundamental concept has already been told, e.g. two people fall in love with each other but their families hate each other; just to name one example. Moreover there are tons of fashion or travel blogs online. You could think it wouldn’t be worth starting a new one on your own because there are too many competitors. But NOBODY tells the same story as you do, from your own unique perspective. So keep in mind that creating your own unique piece of art is always worth it. In my case it’s writing: I only have 26 letters, but I try to show the world how I see those.

Look, talent comes everywhere, but having something to say and a way to say it so that people listen to it, that’s a whole other bag. And unless you get out and you try to do it, you’ll never know. That’s just the truth. And there’s one reason we’re supposed to be here is to say something so people want to hear. So you got to grab it, and you don’t apologize, and you don’t worry about why they’re listening, or how long they’re going to be listening for, you just tell them what you want to say.

Don’t underestimate the power of your voice. And by this I mean the people you reach. Even if there’s one person that listens to you, it’s worth it. If you have an impact of one person’s life, it’s worth it. Sometimes we aren’t courageous enough to say what we want to. We might fear exclusion, bad feedback or stupid looks. But that shouldn’t hold us back. Even social media is a huge place to express criticism, it is also a great opportunity to communicate what you want. There are people that listen. From all over the world. So use Instagram as a platform of inspiration. As Jackson Maine told Ally in the movie: “don’t worry how long they’re going to be listening for, you just tell them what you want to say”. Remember that.

You know, it’s like, I don’t know, you float out, float out at sea, and then one day you find a port, say, “I’m going to stay here a few days.” A few days becomes a few years. And then you forgot where you were going in the first place. And then you realize you don’t really give a shit about where you were going because you like where you’re at.

Although it’s important to have a clear vision of want you want, it’s equally important to let go and go with the flow of life. When you’re too dogged and force things to happen, it sometimes doesn’t work out. Just trust that you’re always on the right track and exactly where you need to be. Sometimes detours lead you to a more beautiful place than you have always imagined.

I’m off the deep end
Watch as I dive in
I’ll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface
Where they can’t hurt us
We’re far from the shallow now

One of my favorite scenes in a “A Star is Born” is definitely the part when Ally and Jack sing “Shallow” together on the stage. It’s a very powerful and emotional song and definitely one of the movie’s highlights. The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways and they go well with different areas of life. I guess that everyone interprets the lyrics a bit different and gives them a unique meaning. For instance it could be the following meaning: in life you have to take risks. It’s important to step out of your comfort zone and jump in at the deep end. Only then magic can happen. Oftentimes, you want to protect your shell and keep up your appearances. You’re afraid of showing the real “you”. You might be afraid of failure or losing. So you keep staying in the shallow. You know that you’re safe there and nobody can hurt you. I could write a whole new blog post about my thoughts regarding this quote but I hope the massage gets clear in only those few lines. Be yourself, be vulnerable, show the world who you are, take risks and crash through the surface.
This leads me to the next “A Star is Born” quote which makes me think about life.

I don’t remember the original quote (since I’ve watched the movie in German and I can’t find it on the Internet in English) but it goes something like this:

Be authentic and show the world who you are. The real you. That’s all you have the world to offer.

In the movie Jack encourages Ally to be who she really is. People will recognize if she’s fake and not showing her true colors. He encourages her also to be proud of who she is and not listening to people that might say “you’re not pretty enough” or “your nose is too big”. There will always be haters and people that grudge you. But it’s important to do your own thing, to believe in yourself. When you are aware of  what you’re doing and fully support you, people will do the same.

As you see, “A Star is Born” is full of memorable quotes. I could really watch the movie again and can’t wait until it’s on DVD. In the meantime I content myself with watching interviews and listening to the soundtrack a hundred times a day, haha.

What about you? Have you watched the movie yet? And what do you think about the quotes? Can you refer?

  1. Must admit I hadn’t been too interested in seeing this, having avoided a lot of the media attention to it during its release, but now I definitely have to check it out! On my to-watch-list! 😀

    1. Oh wow, thank you for your kind comment. You really have to check it out. I haven’t been a Lady Gaga or Bradley Cooper fan before but this movie changed everything. I just watched the trailer a couple of months ago and went to the cinema, pretty unbiased. I haven’t really noticed all the media hype because I didn’t really care about this movie. But now after watching it, I definitely understand. 🙂 Cool that you have it on your to-watch list. I’d love how you think about it 🙂
